The Fight for Clean Air in Alabama’s Industrial Heartland

“Our mission is to advance healthy air and environmental justice in Alabama through education, advocacy, and collaboration,” states Michael Hansen, the executive director of GASP. This mission is a direct response to the systemic issues that have created “sacrifice zones,” where the health of residents is compromised for industrial profit.

GASP’s persistent legal pressure was a key factor in a settlement that ultimately led to the plant’s closure, a landmark achievement for community health and safety.
Empowering the Community
Beyond the courtroom, GASP believes in empowering residents with knowledge and tools. Through its Air Watch program, the organization helps communities monitor their own air quality, collecting crucial data that validates their experiences and strengthens the case for regulatory action. GASP also focuses on education, explaining complex environmental laws and health risks in accessible terms. They have provided practical support, such as distributing air purifiers to households most affected by poor air quality, offering immediate relief while fighting for long-term solutions.

Led by a dedicated team including staff attorney Haley Lewis, GASP continues to advocate for policy changes that would prevent future environmental injustices.
